Our team of researchers, patient partners, clinicians, students, staff, and knowledge translation (KT) specialists are passionate about improving the quality and consistency of rehabilitation care for people undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery. We believe in a patient-oriented research approach and use innovative KT strategies co-developed by and for both patients and clinicians. Our overall goal is to improve access to high quality rehabilitation care to optimize patient outcomes and experiences after hip and knee replacement surgery for osteoarthritis.
Our research is based at the Centre for Aging SMART on the Vancouver General Hospital campus. The Centre (formerly called the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility), is supported by the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. We have co-investigators and collaborators in BC, Calgary, Quebec City and Toronto and benefit from the lived experiences of patient partners and research participants from across Canada.
Our Team
Investigators

Marie Westby
Dr. Westby is a physiotherapist with more than 35 years of experience treating individuals with arthritis and total joint replacements. Her early research focused on identifying and addressing gaps in rehabilitation services both before and after joint replacement surgery through identifying best practices for physiotherapy interventions. In her postdoctoral work, she developed and tested quality indicators to establish a minimum standard of rehabilitation care that all patients should expect to receive along the hip or knee replacement journey. Her work is now looking at how best to move these quality indicators into clinical practice. Marie is funded through a Michael Smith Health Research BC Health Professional Investigator award.

Cheryl Koehn
Cheryl has lived with rheumatoid arthritis for 35 years and had total knee replacement in 2019. She has become a national patient community leader, educator, patient research partner and published author. Ms. Koehn has dedicated her life to helping others living with arthritis. She is the Founder and President of Arthritis Consumer Experts (ACE), Canada’s first and largest national patient-led organization that provides science-based information and education programs in both official languages. In her leadership role at Arthritis Consumer Experts, Ms. Koehn has led the development of numerous information and education innovations to the arthritis community and been a key member of our team.

She is a member of the McCaig Institute of Bone and Joint Health, O’Brien Institute of Public Health, Alberta Children’s Hospital Research institute (ACHRI), and a Senior Scientist at Arthritis Research Canada. Deborah is a co-investigator on our quality indicators toolkit implementation study in BC and co-authored a paper on development of these rehabilitation QIs.

Stirling Bryan
Dr. Bryan is a health economist with extensive experience in health policy and decision-making. He is the Chief Scientific Officer for Health Research BC. She has been the longest and most patient supporter of this work since becoming Dr. Westby’s PhD supervisor in 2004. Catherine has co-authored papers and contributed to 2 Cochrane systematic reviews that formed the basis of this project. Catherine is a co-investigator on our quality indicators toolkit implementation study in BC.
Patient partners

Sheila Kerr, BPT
Sheila, a former physiotherapist, was a caregiver to her mother who underwent total hip replacement surgery and subsequent complications. Sheila is living with osteoarthritis in her own hips and knees and hoping to avoid surgery. She stays very active with long e-bike trips, travelling the world and spending quality time with her grandchildren. Sheila’s background in healthcare and personal experience with osteoarthritis, as well as her experience in developing plain language resources through Arthritis Research Canada’s Arthritis Patient Advisory Board make her an ideal patient partner and we are so appreciative of her contributions over the past 15 years.

Laurie Grant, LLB
aurie had a total hip replacement (THR) in 2015 and experienced first-hand how important timely and high quality rehabilitation was in her recovery after surgery. Laurie continues to enjoy cycling, skiing, kayaking and travel as aspects of her active lifestyle. She has been a valued patient partner on this project since 2016. Laurie brings her legal background with close attention to detail and English as a second language teaching experience to our work to ensure the resources we develop are clear and easy to understand by people with diverse backgrounds.
